This pair of illustrations started by my simply wanting to paint the white-blotched freshwater ray that I love to watch in the Ancient Fishes tank at the New England Aquarium. And then it slowly turned into a story of an unlikely friendship. The little girl meets with the ray and fish of the river everyday, and signals them of her arrival by lowering her heart into the river, before going in to swim and play.
